Engagement Ring Metals Compared: Platinum vs 18k, 14k Gold, and Palladium for Daily Wear

A jeweler told a client her platinum band would "never wear down." Fourteen months later she came back with the bottom of the shank visibly thinner — not gone, plowed: metal pushed sideways into the dull satin sheen the trade calls patina. That is the first thing nobody explains about engagement ring metals. "Patina" is honest — it means accumulated micro-abrasion — but it quietly reframes a worn surface as a feature. The platinum didn't vanish; it moved. That one distinction, platinum displaces where gold sheds, decides most of what separates the four choices in front of you.

This is a buyer's guide to engagement ring metals — platinum, 18k gold, 14k gold, and palladium — ranked by what decides whether a ring survives a decade of dishwashing, gym chalk, and car doors. The center stone gets a lab report from GIA, AGS, IGI, or GCAL; the metal gets a hallmark and a sales pitch. Apply the same skepticism to the band — it is the part holding the stone on your hand.

What engagement ring metals actually are under the hallmark

A karat or fineness stamp tells you how much precious metal is in the alloy — and nothing about the other 5% to 41.5%, where the real-world behavior hides.

  • Platinum, stamped PT950, is 95% platinum, alloyed with ruthenium, cobalt, or iridium. Density roughly 21.4 g/cm³ — it feels heavy because it is.
  • 18k gold is 75% gold (stamped 750), density ~15.6 g/cm³. The balance is copper and silver (yellow), copper-heavy (rose), or nickel/palladium under rhodium plating (white).
  • 14k gold is 58.5% gold (14/24, stamped 585), density ~13.3 g/cm³. More alloy means more hardness and lower cost — and, in white gold, often more nickel.
  • Palladium, stamped PD950, is platinum's lighter cousin: density ~12 g/cm³, naturally white, biocompatible, no plating.

Two rings can both read "18k white gold" and behave completely differently depending on whether the whitener is nickel or palladium. The hallmark won't tell you which — you have to ask.

Scratch versus bend: the distinction that runs the whole decision

Jewelers blur "hard," "durable," and "tough," but they are different properties and engagement ring metals split along exactly this line. Hardness resists scratching (the Vickers scale, HV). Toughness and ductility govern whether metal bends and smears rather than cracking or flaking.

Approximate Vickers hardness in the as-worn (cast, work-hardened) condition: platinum PT950 ~120–175 HV, 18k yellow ~150–180 HV, 14k ~150–200 HV, palladium PD950 ~115–140 HV. The platinum range is wide on purpose — soft iridium-platinum sits at the bottom, while the cobalt- and ruthenium-hardened platinum most US and EU casting houses now pour can match or beat 18k. So 14k and 18k are usually harder at the surface than soft platinum, though hardened platinum closes or reverses that gap.

But platinum's real claim was never scratch resistance — it's toughness. Abrade platinum and it smears in place, so the mass stays on the ring. Abrade gold and it sheds microscopic particles; over years, prongs and the band's underside literally thin out. In practice:

  • Platinum scratches more easily than 14k but loses almost no mass — scratches read as a dull, satiny finish a bench jeweler re-polishes, and the metal is still there. Best of the four for holding a center stone over decades: worn prongs are the leading cause of lost diamonds, and platinum prongs thin slowest. Palladium behaves the same way at lower density.
  • 14k gold usually has the hardest surface of the four and is the most brittle — it shrugs off daily scuffs, but a hard enough impact is likelier to crack a thin section than bend it. 18k is the middle: harder than soft platinum, but it sheds, so prongs need occasional re-tipping.

If you work with your hands, the question isn't "which won't scratch" (none truly resist it) but "which keeps mass on the prongs" — platinum, then palladium, then 18k, then 14k.

Skin sensitivity: the nickel problem nobody mentions at the counter

Nickel is the most common contact allergen in the developed world. In the dermatology literature, roughly 15–17% of women test positive for nickel sensitization — several times the male rate, largely down to greater jewelry and piercing exposure (Ahlström et al., Contact Dermatitis, 2019). Engagement rings are a frequent trigger because traditional white gold uses nickel as the whitener.

  • Nickel-whitened white gold (still common in 14k, sometimes 18k) can cause contact dermatitis: redness, itching, a rash under the band. The rhodium plating masks it until it wears through — typically 12–24 months on a daily-wear ring — at which point skin meets the nickel beneath.
  • Palladium-whitened white gold costs more and sidesteps the allergy, but still benefits from rhodium plating for color.
  • Platinum and palladium are biocompatible — the same reason platinum is used in implants and pacemaker leads. For sensitive skin they are the conservative choice: no plating, no nickel, nothing to wear through.

Ask explicitly: "Is the white gold whitened with nickel or palladium?" If the seller doesn't know, treat it as nickel; for a known sensitivity, specify platinum, palladium, or palladium-white-gold in writing on the order.

Color and maintenance: rhodium plating is a recurring cost, not a one-time finish

This is the marketing gap that costs buyers most over time. White gold is not white: the raw alloy is a pale grayish-yellow, and the bright silvery look comes from rhodium plating, a microns-thick electroplated layer that wears off. On a daily-wear band, expect re-plating every 12–24 months at $60–$150 a visit — a quiet $400–$1,200 over a decade nobody flagged when they sold you the "low-cost" white gold.

Platinum and palladium are naturally white-gray and never need plating; platinum's satiny patina re-polishes periodically — cheaper than re-plating, and optional. Yellow and rose 18k/14k are their own natural color too, and rose gold's copper makes it slightly harder than yellow.

Cost: per-gram math, and why the finished platinum band still costs more

People quote platinum as wildly more expensive than gold. That reflex is out of date: gold has sat above platinum per ounce since around 2015, and an ounce of gold now often runs well over twice an ounce of platinum — so by raw metal alone, platinum is frequently the cheaper of the two. Check live spot the week you buy.

Yet the finished platinum band almost always costs more, for two reasons that aren't spot:

  1. Density. Platinum (21.4 g/cm³) is far heavier than 14k alloy (~13.3 g/cm³) — about a 1.6x ratio. The identical ring shape contains ~1.6x the grams of metal in platinum.
  2. Fabrication. Platinum melts hotter, machines harder, and demands more skilled bench time to cut, set, and finish — where most of the real premium lives.

So the platinum premium is real, but it comes from grams and labor, not a richer metal. Palladium is the wild card: its spot price is the most volatile of the four — above $3,400/oz in early 2022, then under $1,000/oz by 2023, at times below platinum — so a quote can swing month to month for reasons unrelated to your ring.

Typical ranges for a plain-to-moderate solitaire, metal-and-labor only:

  • 14k gold: roughly $300–$700
  • 18k gold: roughly $500–$1,100
  • Palladium: roughly $500–$1,100
  • Platinum 950: roughly $900–$1,700

The 14k-to-platinum gap lands around $600–$1,200, driven by density and labor, not spot. On a ring whose center diamond — graded by GIA or AGS — runs $4,000–$12,000, that upgrade is single-digit percentage points of the total. Skimping on the metal to spend 95% on a stone the metal has to hold is poor allocation: spend on the prongs, and economize, if you must, by dropping the diamond a clarity grade where it's still eye-clean.

What to pick for daily wear

For a ring worn every day — the stress case this guide is built around — two metals win, for different reasons:

  • Set it and stop thinking about it: platinum 950. Highest prong retention, no plating, no nickel. Pay the premium once and recurring cost is near zero — the default for a ring that must survive decades on a working hand or sensitive skin.
  • Maximum surface durability for the money: 14k gold. The hardest, cheapest, most scratch-shrugging option, and in yellow or rose it needs no plating. The trade-offs are real: it can crack rather than bend under a hard knock, prongs shed and want a check every 2–3 years, and white 14k usually means nickel.

Choose platinum for durability with no maintenance, or 14k for nearly the same toughness at the lowest price. Two runners-up: palladium 950 gives platinum's behavior lighter and often cheaper, if your bench can repair it; 18k palladium-white gold is brighter on a tighter budget, if you budget re-plating every ~2 years. Either way, skip soft platinum alloys if scratch resistance is the priority, and skip nickel white gold if your skin reacts.

What to do at the counter

Ask these five and write the answers on the order:

  1. "What's the exact fineness — PT950, 18k, 14k, PD950?" The stamp, not a vibe.
  2. "If it's white gold, is the whitener nickel or palladium?" Decisive for allergy and re-plating. No answer = assume nickel.
  3. "Is it rhodium-plated, and what does re-plating cost here?" Turns a hidden recurring fee into a comparable number.
  4. "What metal are the prongs, and will you re-tip them under warranty?" Prongs fail before bands — where lost stones come from.
  5. "What's the all-in gram weight and the metal/labor breakdown?" Lets you sanity-check the price against spot.

Then have an independent appraiser — or the bench that would do your repairs — confirm the hallmark with an XRF reading. The diamond gets the GIA report; the metal gets your due diligence. A band that holds the stone is worth more over ten years than one extra clarity grade you can't see without a loupe.
